         What Is Microblading

Microblading is a cosmetic technique that creates the appearance of fuller, perfectly shaped eyebrows by applying a semi-permanent makeup.

 

The treatment has taken off in the last couple years as more women have discovered the incredible results. Microblading is popular among women all over the world and has been featured in numerous media outlets, including Glamour, Vogue, The Today Show, Cosmopolitan and more.

 

Celebrities like Madonna, Lena Dunham and Bella Thorne have given rave reviews for the treatment, catapulting it into the national spotlight.

 

But what is microblading exactly, and how does it work?

 

Here's everything you need to know.

Explain it to me: what is microblading?

Microblading is a specialized eyebrow treatment that adds pigment into the superficial layers of the skin to resemble eyebrow hair. 

 

The term "microblade" refers to the simple, hand-controlled tool that the technician uses to add pigment into your eyebrows. The tool has about nine very tiny blades, which make very fine lines in your eyebrows into which color pigments are then deposited.

 

With pigment added, the fine lines resemble real hair, so that your eyebrows look fuller.

So, it's kind of like a tattoo?

Yes, sort of—the technique is very similar to tattooing, and some women will casually refer to microblading as "eyebrow tattoos."

 

But whereas tattoos are performed by mechanized needles, microblading is done with a handheld tool to give the technician even greater control. Also, the pigment does remain in the skin as long as an ordinary tattoo does.

What are the benefits?

So, what is microblading really designed to do? Simple: give you beautiful, fuller-looking eyebrows!

 

Here are the primary reasons why the treatment has become so popular:

 

  • Eyebrow restoration: Many women use microblading to restore the look of their eyebrows after experiencing hair loss from tweezing, age or other factors.
     

  • No more daily makeup: Since the pigment is semi-permanent, you don't have to worry about applying makeup every time you want fuller-looking eyebrows. A writer for Cosmopolitan noted after her treatment, "I don't plan on using another brow product again."
     

  • Overall enhancement and shape: Even if you already have full eyebrows, it may not be the shape you'd prefer. Microblading can enhance the overall look of your brows and give you a shape that's perfect for your face and style.

What can I expect during treatment?

Microblading treatments are very simple and can be worked into your schedule just as easily as other beauty treatments.

 

Here's what a typical treatment appointment looks like:

 

Overview

 

  • Our microblading treatments require two visits.
     

  • Your initial appointment will generally take approximately 90 minutes.

 

Planning
 

  • We will consult with you to get an idea of how you want your "dream eyebrows" to look.

  • We will then begin to design the shape of your new brows... with a brow pencil.

​​

  • We utilize the 3D eyebrow technique by applying hairstrokes across eyebrow ridges, thus creating a realistic, 3D effect.  The actual depth of the microblade will also vary on each hairstroke for even more realistic results.

 

Treatment

 

  • Lidocaine is applied to your eyebrows, which numbs the area to ensure your comfort during the treatment. Lidocaine is commonly used here.
     

  • We begin your treatment by using a microblade to make tiny cuts into "your approved design" of the drawn-on eyebrows, while creating hairstrokes.

  • We then apply our custom-mixed pigments over the top of the tiny hairstrokes.

​​

  • After a few minutes of allowing the color to settle, we will wipe away the excess pigment and that's it! You're ready to show off your beautiful new eyebrows to the world.

 

Check-up appointment

 

  • A touch-up visit is usually required about 30 days after the initial visit. This allows the technician to see how the color has settled and make corrections if necessary.

What happens after treatment?

Here are a few things to keep in mind after the initial appointment:

 

  1. You may notice a little pinkness around your eyebrows upon completion of your first treatment.  You'll notice that this will disappear within a couple of hours.  Overall, you will LOVE your brows immediately!
     

  2. Initially, your eyebrows will appear darker.  During the next week to ten days, you'll notice a lightening/softening of color, as you'll lose approximately 30% of the color during this time.
     

  3. You should avoid getting your eyebrows wet and avoid touching or rubbing them during the first ten days.

How long do the results last?

The results from microblading vary by person and are generally designed to last 12-18 months before requiring a maintenance procedure. This means no more worrying about using brow products every time you go out!

 

You can also extend the results even further by scheduling additional touch-up visits over time. Microblading is designed to be semi-permanent, so the color won't remain forever without additional treatments.

Am I the right candidate for microblading?

Actually, there is no single "perfect" candidate for microblading. Any woman (or man) who wants fuller-looking eyebrows, perfectly shaped to their wishes, is ideal for the treatment.

 

As mentioned above, many woman choose the treatment because their hair growth has slowed or stopped due to plucking, and they're tired of using other products to tediously "draw" their brows. But that's just one scenario. Microblading is popular among women of all backgrounds and situations.

So, it's not just for celebrities?

Absolutely not!

 

While you will probably continue to hear about more celebrities trying microblading, this treatment is not just for Hollywood. It has become a go-to cosmetic treatment for women across the spectrum. And you don't need to be a star to afford it either.
